This course is NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS - You must have completed our Bookbinding course for beginners or equivalent.
The case binding is a way of making books whereby the cover (the case) is made separately from the text block and then attached to it. This course teaches the rudiments of making books by hand and working with leather, it will provide you with all the techniques needed for refining these skills. This traditional book structure will be explored using materials that will endure over time. Students have access to a wide range of tools and equipment to ensure the creation of an attractively designed, well-constructed book.
What techniques will we cover?
This course introduces you to leather paring and covering books with leather. You will be taught to use a variety of tools and materials and how to apply them to the construction of your book. By the end of this weekend, you will learn skills fundamental to hand bookbinding finishing with two leather bound books, a Lover's Pair.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
• Making up endpapers
• Section sewing on tapes to make a book block
• Rounding & backing and making a hollow spine
• be introduced to leather paring, then covering your book with leather and casing in
